Markham, Ontario, October 14, 2009 Summer's out and school's in – and cold and flu season is just around the corner. With the highly publicized threat of the H1N1 virus' arrival, Canadians are proactively protecting their health by stocking up on hand sanitizers.
After a 176% spike in sales last April (immediately following the initial identification of the H1N1 virus), sales of hand sanitizers have remained strong, up nearly $6.5 million (+29%) from this time one year ago. Hand sanitizers are currently a $22 million dollar business in the Canadian consumer packaged goods market as tracked by Nielsen.
“Everywhere you look, there are tips about how to avoid spreading or contracting viruses this winter,” says Carman Allison, Director, Marketing Communications, Nielsen Canada. “We're seeing that Canadians are ‘paying' attention, and want to reduce their risk of exposure.”
Even as we demonstrate our agreement that prevention is the best medicine, ever-practical Canadians are also prepared to monitor potential ailments: sales of fever thermometer and accessories are up 7% from the same period a year ago.
