Markham, Ontario, November 18, 2009: As Canadians strive to stave off viruses and illnesses this flu season, certain household and health-related products are benefiting from a lift in sales. According to Nielsen Canada, our purchases are reflecting our desire to take the right actions to keep ourselves and our families healthy.
Products showing most notable bump in sales at the check-out counter include:
Hand sanitizer products continue to fly off the shelf – with sales in the latest four week period up 189% – contributing a sales increase of 44% for this category over the year.
“Individuals may land on different sides of the fence when deciding whether to get a flu shot this year, but we all clearly agree that paying extra attention to surface cleanliness and hand hygiene just makes good common sense,” says Carman Allison, Director, Marketing Communications, Nielsen Canada.
Are these efforts paying off? If sniffles are an indication, you could say it's so far so good: sales of facial tissues are flat from a year ago whether looking dollar sales or units sold.
